The Schaag Cross Garden
A place of faith and remembrance

From history to the present: in Nettetal-Schaag, today's Cross Garden (Kreuzgarten) commemorates a site that was once part of the mighty Westwall — one of the largest fortification lines in Europe. After the Second World War, the ruins of a demolished bunker were transformed into a place of peace, hope and remembrance.
Since 1950, the fallen of both world wars have been commemorated here, continuing a tradition practised for over 100 years in the Schaag district of Nettetal. Many local residents are committed to preserving this special place.
To step foot in the Cross Garden today is to walk in the footsteps of history: in a landscape once dominated by concrete, the nature and silence now invite visitors to pause and reflect. We warmly welcome you to visit the Cross Garden and Mary Garden (Mariengarten) in Schaag.
